Toride city is located within 40 kilometers from Tokyo. We have good access from the Narita airport, too. The best way to access Toride City is to take the JR Joban Line from Ueno station.
Toride City is known for its many historic sites. We intend to protect this precious historic heritage to ensure it survives into the future.
Under the feudal system of the Edo era, feudal lords were required to stay in Edo every other year. Residences of local influential men or wealthy farmers were used as the official designated inns. The role was assigned to the Someno family in Toride.
Honjin was built in 1795. It's the oldest and the largest construction preserved as Honjin(officially appointed inn for feudal lords) on Mito-kaido highway of the Edo era. Items and documents related deeply with the past feudal loads of Mito Tokugawa family are handed down.
Chozenji temple is the first place where visitors can obtain amulets of 88 sacred places of the Shin-sikoku soma rejo. Daikokuten, one of the seven Gods of good fortune is also enshrined there.
This hall is built in a rare archtectural style called Turbanshell hall style. Visitors travel one way without crossing paths either entering or returning.Worship is possible only once a year, on April 18th.
Sanbutsudou hall was built in the early 16th century. It's the only nationally designated important cultural property in Toride. The hall is surrounded by a skirt-like passageway, and is the only one building of this style in Japan.
The flow of Tone river was reconstructed to prevent the flood at the end of the Meiji era. As a result of this reconstruction, Ohori area became opposite side of the river. Residents of Ohori area arranged a ferryboat as a means of transportation between the Ohori area and the city center. It has been utilized for commuting to work and school, playing an important role in the daily lives of the residents.
Today, it's also used for purpose of tourism.
There're ponies in this pasture. You can enjoy pony (horse) riding and the beautiful scenery of the riverside of the Kokai river.
Okazeki dam was constructed by Ina Hanjuro Tadaharu in the early Edo era. The area around Okazeki dam is famous as a cherry blossoms' viewing spot.
A huge 1600-year-old zelkova tree is in the precincts of the Kogenji temple. In the cave of the tree's tap root,A guardian deity of children is enshrined. It's called Keyaki Jizo , and is believed to bring blessings for easy childbirth and nursing.
Toride Tone river kite flying festival(とりで利根川たこあげ大会)is held as one of the annual New Year's events in Toride. A kite-making workshop is held, where many children take part.
The custom of collecting the sacred straw rope,pine branches and talismans used to decorate on New Year's Day and burning them in a tower made of bamboo and straw, is called 'Awantori' or 'Dondo-yaki'. This kind of festival is held all over Japan to pray for the health of family.
In May, many poppies bloom all at once along the riverbank of Kokai river. The flow of poppies looks like a red canal, which extends more than 1 kilometer.
Yasaka jinja Shrine festival is known as one of the most traditional Toride's summer festivals. It's held on 1-3th August. Visitors can enjoy the typical Japanese traditional local festival.
Toride Tone river Fireworks Festival is the biggist event in Toride. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of Japanese summer festival and a visual feast of pyrotechnic displays in the night sky over the river.
Toride Industry Festival is held in early November. They sell farm products, foodstuffs and folk crafts produced in Toride.
The natural emvironment of Toride is blessed with pure underground water. It gives vital vegetables and sake making. Please try Toride's local specialties, Japanese sake and pickled vegetables called Narazuke.
